Respiri dell`Anima Ascoltando i Vidi Aquam mi sono venuti in mente
subito i Dead Can Dance; ma non quelli di una volta, non quelli un
po` barocchi e folk di Brendan Perry: quelli di "Spiritchaser", un
disco con molti interrogativi, che segue forse di più le ispirazioni
orientaleggianti di Lisa Gerrard piuttosto che i toni più "favoleschi"
del suo collega. "Apocalisse" é un lavoro che ammicca a queste visioni
in musica, prescindendo anche dal concetto stesso di band, e unendosi
al non troppo folto coro in cui figurano anche Endvra, Fata Morgana
e Beyond Dawn. Alla ricerca di un filo conduttore nelle influenze
portanti di "Apocalisse" mi sono trovato un po` in difficoltà: se
da una parte alcuni brani suggeriscono un`idea di minimalismo portato
fino all`estremo (come in "Guilty" e "Fader") altri sembrano puntare
tutto sull`evocatività e la suggestività, spesso con ottimi risultati
(penso in particolare a "Etruria" e alle due versioni di "Graceless
End"). La voce, quando c`é, é spesso solo narrante, e i synth la fanno
da padrone. Un richiamo immediato, come già detto, sono i Dead Can
Dance ma quasto vale soprattutto per certe ritmiche e scelte di orchestrazione
(sintetica), mentre per quanto riguarda le partiture non ho potuto
non notare una sorta di parentela con i comunque molto più malati
Bohren & der Club of Gore. Credo che in ogni caso queste siano solo
somiglianze, dettate anche dalla scarsità di riferimenti in quanto
a musica strumentale e sintetica nelle orecchie del recensore medio:
i Vidi Aquam riescono nell`obiettivo di creare un prodotto unico,
forse di scarsa vendibilità ma anche di grande fascino, che ha saputo
darmi diverse ore di piacevoli suggestioni. di Francesco Bragagni

Limited to 166 copies, APOCALISSE is a compilation which gathers six
tracks of a tape titled "9.96" plus six unreleased ones coming from
the 1995/'97 period of the band. I wasn't familiar with Vidi Aquam's
sound and since the first listening it made me remember some new wave/goth
bands that were active in Italy in the 80's. For the foreign people
that isn't aware of the Italian post/new wave movement of those years,
try to imagine a mixture between Batcave bands, first Coil and Joy
Division. The sound they produced was someway unique and almost unknown
outside Italy. The most famous bands have been Dead Relatives, Limbo
(the first tape and mini LP), Blusons Noirs (the first band of Massimo
Mantovani, who soon after formed Thelema) along with many others.
For sure this is a mere classificantion because there were so many
bands and influences that it's restrictive to name few influences
or few genres because as usual there were bands with a darker sound
as well as many Cure followers. Well, this isn't Vidi Aquam case as
their sound is taking its forms from post punk and early Death In
June but they are able to experiment even more presentig us twelve
tracks tense, dark and worth the listening. Most of them haven't got
a definite melodic structure but when effected guitars and keyboards
create the atmosphere, then the vocals take care of the melody with
recitative parts. A good mixture of dark ambient, 80's post punk and
early industrialism that could interested industrial lovers and goth

Finalmente ecco tra le mie mani la ristampa del secondo, fantastico
demo dei Vidi Aquam. Quel "9.96" uscito originariamente per "L'Alternative
Dramatique" che suscitò molto interesse attorno a se, sia in Italia
che all'estero. Ecco dunque, per chi se le fosse perse, "Guilty" (un
ipnotico sabba che manda ancora oggi in trance), la splendida e marziale
"Etruria", "Silence" (bella, da pelle d'oca...) e tutte le altre.
Ma non è finita qua! Infatti nella nuova veste, oltre alle sei tracce
del demo, si possono ascoltare altri sei inediti del periodo 95/97.
Musicalmente sono totalmente diversi dai Vidi Aquam che conosciamo
adesso, come è diversa la line-up che ha registrato queste canzoni
(a parte il fondatore Nikita). Musica rituale, ambient, d'atmosfera,
inetichettabile. Mettetela come volete, ma cose come l'allucinogena
"Stone mask" (qui nella versione del '96) mi fanno venire i brividi,
soprattutto se ascoltate ad alto volume. Chiude il lavoro la funerea
"Never been", sempre dal demo del '96, degno epilogo di una ristampa
che deve essere vostra. Affrettatevi però, il Cd è limitato a 166

When
you dredge up the past it is because it means something to you, but
others may be perplexed or simply pleasantly dismissive, and compared
to the beauty of their recent work, this ragbag assortment of early
oddities doesn’t pack much of a punch. It fills your room briefly
with a sense of mystery that soon becomes a fractious confusion. A
tangled mixture of filmic music and muted stains of chilled romantic
motifs from centuries past, it seems inviting, but rarely goes anywhere.
Tracks (I can’t call these songs) start, and the ideas that manifest
themselves quickly start simply repeating, with an occasional increase
in stridency towards the end, before dissolving away. ‘Guilty’ was
imaginatively hazy, with the vocals coming in like an overheard conversation,
and strangely insistent piano, but ‘Etruria’ is bad-tampered, leading
to an interesting, Omen-like thrall. The disembodied torment of the
vocals in ‘Silence’ fitted neatly with the stern attitude, but borders
on unwieldy, ‘Lycis’ and ‘Soulbreath’ are lighter and murkier respectivel,y
but simply don’t boast anything that music like this requires. You
need to be able to react to it, or slip into it, and marvel at the
shadows. This just grumpily stomps and staggers about, keeping you
happily at arm’s length. Some semi-Industrial zest is threatened with
‘Fader’ but nothing really takes off; indeed, towards the end the
CD becomes slightly more ghastly than ghostly with the drumming attempts
on both ‘Stonemask’ and ‘Foreshortening’ slapdash to the point of
a dense slog, so it’s relief when the dirge-like groans of ‘Neverbeen’
finish. There are fans of light Ambient who would enjoy the spirit
here, but for the rest of us it’s rather more ideas being developed
than real instrumentals (the vocals never coming in conventional form,
or providing great input), so it’s one for diehards fans only. GRACELESS

Tempo di antologie anche per i Vidi Aquam. La formazione di Nikita
(Rosa Selvaggia) ci presenta in Apocalisse una sintesi dei primi demo
autoprodotti registrati tra il '95 e il '97. La musica spazia nei
territori avantgarde, con qualche punta di dark ambient. Le tastiere
e gli effetti sono molto in primo piano, e sono accompagnate da chitarre
piene d'eco, suonate in arpeggi minimali, e da solide ma essenziali
linee di basso. La maggior parte dei pezzi sono strumentali e, dove
compare, la voce è usata per declamare i testi. Si tratta senz'altro
di una musica che deve molto al dark anni '80, a quello più cerebrale
e aperto a tentativi di sperimentazione. Il risultato è generalmente
interessante, come d'altra parte venne già riportato nelle recensioni
ai demo originali comparse nei vecchi numeri di Ver Sacrum. Forse
però col passare del tempo questa musica ha perso un po' in freschezza
proprio per il fatto di essere così legata a certi stilemi ormai vecchi
di quasi vent'anni. Inoltre si tratta di brani un po' freddi, non
facilmente assimilabili e immediati. Non mancano comunque dei momenti
molto interessanti e su tutti cito il brano strumentale "Foreshortening".
Ora la musica dei Vidi Aquam viaggia su altri lidi, e il fatto di
non essere mai rimasto uguale a se stesso è un'altra nota di merito
da riconoscere al gruppo: se avete apprezzato i lavori più recenti,
come il CD Queen of Spades, vale la pena scoprire con Apocalisse la
